Joseph F. Souza, Jr. was born in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde Islands, and raised in Lisbon, Portugal and New Bedford, Massachusetts.  After graduating from Worcester State College, he became an officer in the United States Air Force.  He served in France, Spain, Panama, Italy, and various locations in the Midwest and South of the United States.

A trained counseling psychologist, Dr. Souza spent much of his professional career providing therapy in the military community and retired from active duty after 28 years of service to the United States.  After retiring, he made his home for the next twenty years in Lisbon.  During that time, he taught at the Portuguese Air Force Academy, the National Defense Institute, and participated as a member of the Portuguese staff sent to command the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy.  Today, he finds the best self-therapy through his art and music.  A self-taught artist and musician, his work reflects the rich and diverse experiences of his life.

Known to his family and friends as "Zack", Dr. Souza is generous with his time volunteering at the Fort Taber Military Museum and serves on the boards of North Star Learning Centers and the New Bedford Historical Society.  He and his wife, Dawn Blake Souza, a retired educator, live in Dartmouth where he has a home studio.  They enjoy collecting art and antiques and are active in a number of cultural and public service projects in the Greater New Bedford community.
